Artist’s Statement May, 2003
As a child, I learned to speak with my hands…My parents were deaf. Even then, I understood that my hands could be used to express my thoughts and feelings and to interpret the world around me.
In a way, my painting is simply a logical extention of that early childhood experience. I see the world through an artist’s eye. It is not a snapshot of a person or a place or an object. Rather, what I see is filtered through the prism of my thoughts, feelings, and experiences. I then use my hands to express that vision, be it reality or fantasy, in oil on canvass using techniques of the old masters.
My challenge is to capture the essence of my subject and invite the viewer into my painting…He may connect with the same vision I had…or she may create one of her own.
When I first began working in my present studio, I felt a strong presence of the artists who had worked there before me. Shortly after, I had a dream of an owl swooping down on a scorpian with the hope of finding his dinner.
I sculpted this vision and it has become my working mantra… “Face your fears with intelligence” I hope that my work evokes feelings, inspires thought, creates a beautiful space…
